Old Crossleyans 1XV 31 – 10 Wetherby
Crocs Complete Season Double Over Wetherby with Bonus Point Win
Old Crossleyans secured their second home victory in as many weeks on Saturday, defeating Wetherby 31–10. The result follows a win over Selby the previous weekend and ensures the Crocs have completed the double over Wetherby this season.
The hosts made changes to the pack, with Sbulelo Roji starting at prop and Ellis Nuttall returning for his seasonal debut in the back row. However, Roji’s afternoon was cut short after just three minutes due to a head injury assessment following a heavy collision. Veteran Boj Sembi was brought on as his replacement.
Wetherby looked threatening in the early exchanges and earned an early scrum penalty. The momentum shifted when scrum-half Chris Vine took a quick tap penalty, catching the defense off-side and resulting in a yellow card for the visitors. From the subsequent scrum, Darren Ali-Scott ran a sharp line to find Joe Greenwood, who outpaced the defenders to score. James Johnson converted for a 7–0 lead.
Wetherby quickly pulled back three points with a penalty, but the Crocs responded in the 24th minute. Josh Hunt executed an intelligent nudge into the goal zone which bounced perfectly for captain Tom Metcalf to chase down and score. Johnson again converted to make it 14–3. Wetherby managed to strike back through their centres before the break, leaving the score at 14–10 at the interval.
The second half saw the home side dominate territory. Outside backs Matthew Beswick and Joe Greenwood used the touchline effectively to pin Wetherby back, keeping them trapped in their own half for much of the third quarter. With 20 minutes remaining, James Johnson took the opportunity to extend the lead to 17–10 with a successful penalty.
The Crocs finished the game strongly. A chip forward from Hunt took play within a metre of the line, and from the resulting scrum, Vine darted blind and sold a dummy to cross for the try. In the closing exchanges, after tough carries from Brockson Brown and Harry Drennan, Tom Rouse spotted a gap to dive over for the four-try bonus point.
Johnson maintained a 100% kicking record to wrap up the match. The Crocs now have a week off before traveling to face Doncaster Phoenix at Castle Park.
