Old Crossleyans Sign Off Regular Season with Commanding Win Over Morley
Old Crossleyans produced a commanding first-half performance at Broomfield on Saturday to secure a 26-14 bonus-point victory over Morley in their final league game of the season. While the result was not enough to alter their final league standing, the clinical nature of the display provides a vital psychological boost ahead of the post-season.
The afternoon began with a dream start for the home side. Prop Dan Smith, making his 50th appearance for the club, marked the milestone by crashing over for the opening try following a sharp break from fly-half Josh Hunt. The momentum stayed firmly with the Crocs as scrum-half Chris Vine broke through minutes later; though he was hauled down just short, Harry Drennan was on hand to follow up and dive over. Hunt’s conversion pushed the lead to 12-0.
The Crocs’ execution remained sharp as a training-ground move in midfield saw Hunt combine with Alex Thompson, sending the winger on an excellent line to beat the Morley cover and score under the sticks. Despite a yellow card for Jack Hammond shortly after, the Crocs’ defense remained disciplined against Morley’s first major period of pressure.
Before the interval, the Crocs secured the four-try bonus point. A clever "back-door" pass from Hammond found Vine, who finished in the corner with a swallow-dive. Hunt added a superb touchline conversion to take a 26-7 lead into the break.
The second half proved a tighter affair as Morley utilized a strong following wind. The visitors found some success with a chip-through try to narrow the gap to 26-14, but they were largely frustrated by a dogged Crocs defense. Notable shifts from George Banham and Thompson, including a try-saving tackle, ensured Morley could not bridge the gap further.
Brockson Brown was named Man of the Match in what was his final game for the club, putting in a tireless and influential performance.
Despite the five-point win, results elsewhere mean Old Crossleyans finish the campaign in 11th place. While official fixtures are yet to be confirmed, the club expects to travel to Wetherby on April 25th for a relegation playoff.
Old Crossleyans Scorers:
Tries: Smith, Drennan, Thompson, Vine.
